The last few months of preparing for August 27th have been a good mix of support raising and researching equipment. After 10+ hours of researching online, talking to current racers or those on my squad, and visiting two outdoor stores several times, I have most of my gear! (I will post a blog later with specifics for what I am bringing)

Adventures in Missions gave me a packing list in November when I was accepted to the World Race. It is a long list and many of the items I had never seen or even heard of before. Thank you to all the current or past racers who have given me suggestions for what to get. I would be lost without you.

Even though I am traveling internationally for 11 months, I will not be bringing two check-in suitcases and a carryon. That is a luxury that I don’t need. My arms would also break if I had to lug all of that around with me. I am bringing one checked in 70 liter pack with me, and a small backpack as a carryon and for day trips within ministry sites.

Those of you who know me well know that I like to be organized. If I am able to make a list, I will. Better yet, a spreadsheet. Welcome to my shop:

Aka, my brain. This is just part of my research and notes. This google sheet is where I kept track of product details, locations to purchase, prices, and if I already had it or not. Weekly I would go in and edit it because I would find more specifics for what I really need on the race, information from knowledgeable backpackers, or new stores to go to. The options have narrowed down significantly, which brings me peace. I know these items are not only for the world race. I am investing into them to be able to use them for life afterwards too. A lot of these items are currently on their way to my house, and I am excited to use them and figure out how they will fit in my pack 🙂

Each racer has a different experience, which makes it hard to know what I’m getting myself into. For example, I don’t know the specifics of where I will be sleeping each night. One racer I talked to spent a month on top of a mountain in their tents. Others only used their tent during training camp in the state of Georgia.

I have spent time choosing gear needed to travel. I have also bonded with my squad while trying to figure everything out. We are all in the same boat, and our group chat is filled with questions and suggestions for one another. I am blessed with a supportive team. I can’t wait to meet them in person in less than 40 days!!

Prayer Requests:

  • Let go of the worry and high expectations of packing light

  • Peace for preparing this next month

  • Resting well

p.s. Thank you Amazon, Decathlon, Salem Summit, REI, Kaiser Permanente, and anyone who left helpful reviews on gear <3

Not my will, but His,

Sarah

  1. This spreadsheet is amazing. It certainly puts mine to shame. This might make you laugh, but my way or organizing was just writing it down on a piece of paper and then crossing things out when I packed the night before leaving. I was definitely not as organized as you haha. I’m so excited for you and can’t wait to hear more about what this experience becomes for you

  2. Love seeing how your brain works in this way (fellow spreadsheet lover!). One bit of knowledge that may help is that once you get the big things the little things are more accessible than you may think on the field…just maybe not the same brands you’re used to. So, deep breaths, He’s got you! Excited to meet in a little over a month!

  3. Sarah…Matt and I are excited to meet you and journey along side you this next year as your WR coaches. You are well prepared and all the research will pay off as you venture out around the world. Blessings Sarah as you finish your packing and say all your good byes!
